Mercer Island is a beautiful island community on Lake Washington between the cities of Seattle and Bellevue. Last year, I had the pleasure of renovating my client’s traditional Mediterranean-style home on Mercer Island with a California-coastal vibe for their living room. California Coastal design is heavy on the neutrals, organic elements like natural-fiber rugs and woven baskets and feels fresh, laid-back, yet modern. My clients have a vacation home in La Jolla, CA which inspired the design details here like the untreated windows, washed-out woods, and the light-colored sofa.
Our aim was to create a cohesive, light-filled space. They also loved a monochromatic look they saw at a friend’s home and wanted something similar, but as I was designing I felt the space needed a few pops of rich, saturated color to set the lighter tones apart, and they agreed! The end result is a space that is comfortable, beautiful, and functional.
Something fun about this project is that the homeowners got these slipper chairs for free! We covered them in this dark, saturated fabric by Tonic Living and totally updated their look.
Isn’t this a cozy little sitting area? I love mixing metals in my designs, and these gold swing arm lamps by Restoration Hardware (see similar linked below) added the perfect touch.
Styled shelving is a welcome addition to a living room and this one was no exception— it gives you a place to display a selection of family photos, coffee table books, artwork, vases, and sentimental objects.
The light in this space is incredible and there’s nothing more deserving of this sunny corner than a beautiful houseplant— did you know about all of the benefits of having indoor plants in your home?
